The students learn about the Coast Guard and Life Saving Service, railroad car ferries, shipwrecks, Fresnel lenses, the Great Lakes, nautical knot tying, and the lumbering era in Mason County. We offer several different options for school groups. These include guided tours, self-guided tours, and stations set up throughout the museum with volunteers teaching the history to the students. These field trips are geared towards the 2nd-grade curriculum but can be enjoyed and appreciated by any grade level. Homeschool groups also can visit the museum on these days. We offer Maritime History days in both the Spring and the Fall.

Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.Below are a couple of geo-caches located in Mason County. We hope these caches will inspire a deeper appreciation for the region’s rich maritime & lumbering history. Have fun and happy hunting!
The museum is operated by the Mason County Historical Society, which also operates the nearby Historic White Pine Village.
