Happy 228th birthday to the US Coast Guard! On August 4th 1790 congress established the US Revenue Cutter Service for customs enforcement and to protect American shipping and waterways. In 1878 the US Life-Saving Service was established to provide aid and rescue assistance to vessels in distress. On January 28th 1915 the US Lifesaving Service merged with the US Revenue Cutter Service to become the US Coast Guard. In 1939 the US Lighthouse service, which managed all aids to navigation, consolidated with the Coast Guard bringing maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, and management of aids to navigation under one organization. All USCG service members will receive free entrance to the museum.
